首先是重量有区别，紫檀属的花梨木类木材都较轻软，多浮于水，7种花梨木（越柬紫檀、安达曼紫檀、刺猬紫檀、印度紫檀、大果紫檀、囊状紫檀、鸟足紫檀）的气干密度为0.53-1.01克每立方厘米（平均0.79-0.91克每立方厘米）；红酸枝木多沉于水，7种红酸枝木（巴西黄檀、赛州黄檀、交趾黄檀、绒毛黄檀、中美州黄檀、奥氏黄黄檀、微凹黄檀）的气干密度为0.90-1.22克每立方厘米（平均1.02-1.14克每立方厘米）。黑酸枝木也多沉于水，8种黑酸枝木（刀状黑黄檀、黑黄檀、阔叶黄檀、卢氏黑黄檀、东非黑黄檀、巴西黑黄檀、亚马孙黄檀、伯里兹黄檀）的气干密度为0.82-1.33克每立方厘米（平均0.92-1.06克每立方厘米）。

其次是木屑水浸出液的荧光现象。木刨花水浸液，花梨木类多有荧光现象（鸟足紫檀最为显著），而红酸枝木类和黑酸枝木类则无。

还有就是气味方面。花梨木类木材多有辛辣的芳香气味，而红黑酸枝类则多有浓郁的酸香气味。

再有就是花梨木类木材多系散孔材至半散孔材或环孔材倾向明显，而红黑酸枝类是散孔材，半环孔材几不得见。

最后，花梨类材色红褐至紫红，比较均匀，射线组织同形，无异形射线组织倾向，通常单列。红黑酸枝木类材色红褐至紫红或黑，比较均匀，常夹杂有深色条纹，射线组织通常同形，异形倾向明显，通常2列，单列射线较少。
