Well-known 3D model library Sketchfab launches more powerful VR function

Sketchfab is becoming the best platform for viewing 3D models using virtual reality (VR) helmets. I believe many of my friends have witnessed this process through our reports. In the beginning, the company now added a VR button to each model's browsing page; it then released an app that would support all VR helmets and showcase 3D models through the app. Today, the New York-based startup is making it easier for users to move around 3D models.

Today, all 3D models on Sketchfab now have a 2-dimensional "floor" so you can change your observation point. This means that when you point your eyes in one direction (with a VR helmet), Sketchfab will project this direction onto the "floor" pointer accordingly. If you use a cardboard helmet or a button on the Samsung Gear VR, or press a button on the Rift or Vive controller, you will instantly transfer yourself to this point of view. In fact, if you have used a VR helmet in the past, this sport mode will sound familiar.

But what if you are a designer and want to show your users what they want them to see? Sketchfab has developed a scene editor for designers or creators that lets you set the scale of your 3D objects. For example, you have a 3D model of a car, if you want it to look like a normal car instead of a truck. You can do this in the scene editor, like this:

In addition, the "View in VR" button on the Sketchfab web page is even more powerful, allowing you to browse the featured models without having to remove the VR helmet. For example, you can browse all the popular 3D models, all the works of a particular designer, and more.

All of the above needs to be run on a computer running a browser, and your HTC Vive or Oculus Rift will need to be connected to this computer; if you are using a Google Cardboard or Gear VR helmet, you will need Open the website in your phone. Overall, the addition of these features makes Sketchfab a more complete platform for viewing 3D models through virtual reality.
