The Importance of Packaging Die-cutting Drawing from Three Angles

In order to design an excellent package that meets the actual processing requirements, the die-cutting drawing process must be mastered. How important is this craft skill? Today, based on years of experience, the author will analyze the importance of the die-cutting drawing process from three angles.

Designing the angle of the plate making process

For packaging design and plate making, it is necessary to focus on the matching relationship between graphics and processing technology. The following is an example of a handbag.

In the prepress design of the handbag, the packaging designer often only considers the suitability and aesthetics of the graphic part of the handbag (the gray part in Fig. 1), and rarely considers the stereoscopic effect of the final shape of the handbag, while the handbag The molding effect often has a great influence on the prepress design.

(1) The punching position of the handle of the handbag.

When designing the surface of the handbag, it is very likely that the punching position of the handle will cause the punching to be formed on the important graphic when the final processing of the handbag is completed. Here, the author gives an empirical value for your reference: hole distance = (1/2 tote bag length -20) mm, two holes from the upper fold line is 20mm (as shown in Figure 2).

(2) Folding lines on both sides of the bag.

As we all know, the tote bag is transported after being folded and folded, so in the future, the text is prevented from traversing the folding line, which affects the overall aesthetics of the tote bag. As far as the pre-press design is concerned, the folding lines on both sides should not be arranged as much as possible.

(3) The bottom of the handbag.

Some of the bottom of the handbag has some special graphic design, such as the company LOGO, etc., should be designed in the gray part of Figure 2, but if the packaging designer does not know the specific folding method at the bottom of the handbag, it is easy to appear occluded Phenomenon, so the designer must understand the bottom of the bag.

In summary, if the packaging designer does not understand the die-cutting process, it will lead to the pre-press design not conforming to the actual processing; on the contrary, if the packaging designer understands the die-cutting process, as long as the design is based on Figure 2, The design can be done quickly and easily, and the tote bag is perfect after molding.

The angle of the die-cutting process

In the cost of packaging production, paper costs account for the highest proportion, but customers often do not consider this, they are often used to print proofs to do die-cutting, but this will make the die-cut version very passive. I have encountered the following situations when I made a die-cut version for my customers.

(1) Provide a standard CAD die-cut layout.

(2) Provide a rough map of the finished product.

(3) Provide print proofs and dictate graphic styles.

(4) Only describe the shape.

In the first case, the communication time is the least, and the quality and speed are the best. The second case is mostly from the designers who understand the die-cut version, but do not understand the specific settings and details of the die-cut version. The cut map is frequent; the third and fourth cases can only continuously communicate with customers when making die-cut versions, especially in the fourth case.

The production process of carton packaging mainly includes design, plate making, printing, laminating or glazing, die-cutting, and paste-box molding, while the die-cutting process is relatively backward. If the die-cutting process is caused by the customer's design, the die-cutting plate cannot be normal. Production will directly cause waste of all the previous processes.

Customer demand perspective

Today, most customers hand over all the processes printed on the packaging to the printing house, but most of the packaging designers in the printing house do not understand the die-cutting process. Once they enter the die-cutting process, they will inevitably die-cut. The production company even has three-way communication with customers. And some customers will design, print and paste the box to different manufacturers, which requires more communication.

In summary, if the packaging designer knows the die-cutting drawing process, it is not a problem to co-ordinate all the work in the early stage: to thoroughly understand the customer concept, complete the design plate making, and the AI plate-making document is handed to the printing plate for printing, DWG die-cutting The document was handed over to the die-cutting production company to make a die-cut version. This will control the two core parts of the entire packaging production process.

The author gives an example of personal experience: a friend who does post-press processing allows the author to refer to a business, let the author see if the business can be more compact in typesetting? This is a very simple plug-in cover box. He used the following layouts of Figure a and Figure b respectively, and the author chose the typesetting method of Figure c. This type of knifeless can also be the most paper-saving and economical. However, if the packaging designer does not understand the die-cutting process, it is difficult to think of the layout of Figure c to solve the problem.

As a packaging designer, if you do not understand the die-cutting process, it will be out of the actual situation, bringing a lot of unnecessary trouble to the subsequent processing of the packaging. Therefore, it is necessary for the packaging design workers to master this knowledge.
