Bodegas Torres has adopted light bottle packaging for Sangre de Toro and Vina Sol products to reduce CO2 emissions.
The company produces 18.7 million Burgundy bottles each year, reducing bottle weight by 16.67%, meaning that it will reduce the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions in the production process.
A 1 gram reduction in the weight of the bottle equals 1 gram of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. In addition, reducing bottle weight will also reduce CO2 emissions during wine transport.
The 2008 Vina Sol, bottled at the end of May, is the first wine in the winery to be packaged in lightweight bottles. The winery also plans to reduce the weight of the Bordeaux bottle, which has an annual production of 5.1 million Bordeaux bottles.
