Brazil: Large demand for packaging supplies

According to the latest data from the Corrugated Cardboard Association of Brazil (ABPO), in 2000 the country’s sales of corrugated boxes increased by 5% to 6% compared to 1999, while other packaging items such as aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles, flasks and PET, etc. also had an increase of 7%, 3%, 8%, 33% and 22%, respectively, showing that Brazil's beverage, electrical appliances, auto parts, and soft drinks industries have all seen an increase in production.

It is reported that due to the substantial increase in exports of Brazilian fresh fruits, natural fruit juice concentrates, and electronic products (such as DVDs), the company’s Orsa Group, the manufacturer of corrugated boxes, has seen its turnover increase by 20%, while its customers, Mossoro and Nolem, add up. A total of 4.5 million corrugated cartons were consumed.

The Brazilian Plastics Association stated that the Brazilian plastic packaging industry had caused sales to be affected due to rising prices of raw Nalta, but supply and demand have now returned to normal and sales in 2000 increased by 8%. Among them, the use of PET for carbonated beverage packaging increased by 22%. In addition, the growth rate of Brazilian glass bottles in 2000 was 3%, and the output was 900,000 tons. The largest demand on the market today is the 335 ml long neck glass bottle, which has increased from 750 million to 1 billion.
