Recently, an ambitious Malaysian young founder team, MinNatureMalaysia, has completed their 17,000-square-foot miniature wonderland for eight years. Currently, the 3D printed work is the largest micro show in Malaysia.
In the early stages of the project, the only thing that the initial members of the team, Alvin and Chan, did without any architectural background knowledge, was to constantly learn to design and build 3D printed parts. According to the two, this is the most time-consuming part of the entire project, and the enthusiasm for 3D printing has supported them through this stage. This situation lasted for several years, while their core team members expanded to seven. By the summer of 2016, the team had grown to nearly 60 members.
It is understood that the 12 parts of Mini Wonderland consist of two types of models: models based on existing buildings in Malaysia and models imagined by team members. According to Alvin, the first type of model is more difficult to design and 3D printing because it must be ensured that the model contains all the real details and a correct reduction ratio.
This means that team members must first visit the building and take photos, then redraw with 3D modeling software. Once complete, the file is sent to MinNature's 3D printer. Alvin said that in order to ensure the correct ratio, they will test and print.
Depending on the complexity, each model can take anywhere from 2 days to 3 months. The most difficult model is MasjidNegara, which contains nearly 1,300 parts, and four different teams lasted three months.
Once assembled, they clean and sand the joints for coloring. Finally, electronic components were added and the entire model was illuminated, and a 17,000-square-foot miniature Malaysian fairyland was born. The whole work is mainly made of plastic, but there are also real rocks, stones, wood and wiring.
MinNature will soon begin their second construction project, which includes an airport and Malaysia's iconic twin towers.
Alvin explained that his team will continue to expand in the next few years and plans to launch new projects.
