For many years, Lenovo has been tirelessly promoting the green PC strategy. So how does Lenovo think of a green PC? How does a computer judge whether it is green? How does Lenovo practice its own green philosophy? How does Lenovo's PC do green? In recent days, the reporter interviewed Ma Jun, general manager of Lenovo Group’s large customer business desktop computer, on these issues.

Reporter: Lenovo has been tirelessly promoting the green PC strategy. So how does Lenovo think of a green PC? How does a computer judge whether it is green?

Ma Wei: Nowadays, green has become a fashionable word. Every manufacturer is talking about its own green strategy. Everyone has their own different understanding of green, but there is not a unified standard for what is green. Lenovo believes that whether a computer is green is mainly from three perspectives:

Component selection is the fundamental point of energy saving. For example, everyone knows that the most energy-consuming devices are the display and the CPU. There is software. It depends on whether the computer has the right software to manage, so that it can save energy. A green computer, energy saving is a very important part.

Followed by environmental protection. First of all, it depends on whether the materials are harmless to the environment or to minimize the damage to the environment. These materials include plastics and packaging boxes during the transportation process. Secondly, a very important point is whether or not garbage is recycled. If computer garbage is not recycled, it will cause environmental pollution.

It is healthy again. The health here includes both safety applications, which are safe when used, harmless to the human body, including silence and radiation, green computers must be able to prevent radiation, and must not emit harmful radiation. Finally, health is the use of The person will not be infected with bacteria because of using the computer.

To achieve the above three points can only support the concept of PC green.

Reporter: Then, how does Lenovo practice its own green idea and how does Lenovo's PC achieve green environmental protection?

Ma Yi: Lenovo is to achieve green environmental protection through the protection of five links, these five links are: R & D design, material procurement, production processes and testing processes, logistics delivery and after-sales service.

First of all, we look at R&D and design. After the merger of Lenovo and IBM's original PC division, we have formed three R&D bases in Beijing, Raleigh, and Daiwa Japan. Our R&D system has two poles. One part is the development of new technologies, and the other is the conversion of new technologies. For landing products, we now have more than 300 technical research experts and more than 1,400 engineers in the world. Daiwa Japan does R&D and design of notebook-related products. The Raleigh R&D Center in the United States focuses on desktop R&D. The Beijing R&D Center does more research and development in quality assurance technology. Of course, some R&D work on desktops is also in Beijing. get on. In fact, we have 46 top laboratories in the world, more than 5,000 invention patents worldwide, and we have chief environmental officials to ensure that our products are indeed environmentally friendly.

The hibernation technology of Lenovo PC can reduce the energy consumption of the computer in the dormant state by 60%. The use of advanced high-efficiency light engine technology can make the display save energy by 30%. At the same time, the adoption of energy-efficient power supplies and intelligent speed control fans has also greatly reduced Lenovo PC energy consumption. In fact, if PCs currently used in China are able to use Lenovo's energy efficiency standards, they can save up to 2 billion kWh in the year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 1.5 million Chinese households.

At the same time, every part of the Lenovo computer is designed to meet ergonomic principles and comply with the principles of health. Not only hard drives and optical drives, but also motherboards can be removed without screws, which is conducive to the recovery and reuse of materials.

At present, Lenovo has participated in 11 domestic environmental protection organizations and 9 international environmental protection organizations. Lenovo's intention is to give itself greater environmental protection pressure and responsibility.

Let's look at the material, Lenovo is always the first to introduce low-power CPU PC products, in fact, Intel's new CPU platform can reduce power consumption to 4W. At the same time, we have been strictly restricting the use of hazardous substances in the procurement of materials, prohibiting the use of polyvinyl chloride in materials of 25 grams or more, and committing to completely eliminate them in 2009; at the same time, we will evaluate the chemical emissions of our products. In order to minimize the emission of potential volatile organic compounds, recycled materials are preferred, recycled plastics are used in the production of keypads and chassis panels, and a series of recycled materials such as recycled polyester plastics are independently developed; all efforts are made to avoid metal coatings. The use of plastic components while minimizing design. Brand computers are much more expensive than DIY, and the important reason is because we are very strict on the protection of procurement.

Last year, a partner company called for us to be more involved in the Internet cafe market, thinking that the capacity of the Internet cafe market is very large. IDC also released data saying that the Internet cafe market was underestimated by PC makers. In this regard, we also conducted research and found that the chase for PC prices in the cyber cafe market is extreme. Compared with DIY, we do not have the advantage because we are unwilling to give up stricter quality and quality standards for low prices. So we finally gave up that market.

Next, look at the production management system. Many people have visited our production line. We have a very strict production management process.

Let's look at logistics delivery. Lenovo PCs use composite packaging to reduce material use by 60%. At the same time, recyclable thermoformed cushioning materials are used, which can save 80 tons of original plastic, 100% use of recycled paper pallets, and save 25 tons of wood annually. . In 2006, Lenovo won the "American Star" Medal, the highest design award from the American Packaging Professional Association. We are the only IT company in the world to receive this honor.

The last one is our after-sales service, after-sales service has always been the advantage of Lenovo, we have more than 1,000 after-sales service outlets in the country, in China is the largest coverage, the most extensive, tentacles can even extend to the county town. In addition, many of our after-sales services are provided by Lenovo’s professional engineers, and many other manufacturers, including many brand manufacturers, provide services in this area through outsourcing companies. That is, we can easily recycle the package. If the user's package is not used, it will take up the place and we can take it away. The second aspect is the recovery of the whole machine. I often meet customers who say that there is a pile of computers in the unit's warehouse. I want to throw them away. The State will not let them go, and the processing will not be handled well, so they have to pile up in the warehouse. And we are currently working with the China Association for Poverty Alleviation to launch a green computer aid program. Many companies’ computers have been used for three years or five years. However, in terms of functionality, they can still be used. Many rural primary schools do not have computers and many rural children have not seen computers. At this time, we will help these computers. The company donated old computers to rural schools.

In fact, for computer recycling, we have two methods, which are consistent with the use. We will promote reuse, and we will not use it. We will send it to a professional scrapping point for dismantling. At present, there are only four manufacturers in the country that can do this kind of work. We are working with them to establish this system.

Reporter: Can you use some specific figures and examples to explain what level Lenovo's green PC strategy has achieved?

Ma Hao: In terms of energy saving, we not only passed China's energy conservation certification, but most of our products also passed Energy Star certification. Lenovo has 16 computers equipped with low-power displays and energy management software. The original IBM TVT technology is a highly efficient energy management tool that has now been effectively integrated for Lenovo.

From an environmental point of view, in terms of materials, Lenovo insists on the use of recycled plastics. With regard to computer recycling, the recycling process of our packaging box has been fully established. In terms of noise, we can achieve a maximum of 22 decibels of silence, and 25 decibels is the target of our mainstream products. For radiation protection, we have three radiation points lower than the industry average.
